I participated in a project named Discover Huddersfield and luckily our group were allowed to choose the trial first. We decided upon the Radical Heritage trail around Huddersfield, which was based upon political past events that had happened in spaces and buildings within Huddersfield which we would normally just walk past.
At first, I was a little disappointed with our chosen trail and believed that it would be very dull and uninteresting work. I threw myself into the project nevertheless and surprisingly I rather enjoyed the history behind the trail and comparing the deep-rooted stories to the present purpose of the spaces and buildings.
Our whole group went on the trail together and we decided to evenly split it up. As we had a new member to the course in our group this also helped us to bond and due to this I have made a very good friend and also made closer bonds with people who I didn’t speak to last year, which is great! As we all went on the trail together I personally feel we all gained some more knowledge of Huddersfield through exploring and getting lost along the way and this meant I saw more of the town I study in.
I took on the role of creating the presentation as we collectively decided I was the one with the strongest InDesign skills, therefore I would piece the presentation together and each individual would send me their photos and information for the slide. Although the work was shared evenly personally I felt like I did more work overall due to me creating the presentation and researching the last odd site on our trail. Although this can come across as a negative comment I am taking this in a positive light in that I gained more knowledge of Huddersfield for my future project to make it thorough, and to also refresh my memory from the Summer break on how to use InDesign software again.
The presenting itself could have gone a little better as the people in my group were extremely nervous, as was I, so our project came across quite boring when in fact we had found out some interesting information. If I was to do this again with the same people, the only thing I would change is that we all sit down and piece the presentation together and do some forward planning of running through the presentation before-hand.
Overall it was a great experience learning interesting facts and history about Huddersfield and I also gained some great personal skills of leadership and confidence.
