Over the river, situated behind the timber bridge sits the Hepworth Museum. Standing tall with impressive diagonal walls, situated in a picturesque landscape The Hepworth holds an array of Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore’s sculpture work, along with new up and coming contemporary artists. As a regular visitor of this beautiful building it never fails to impress me with the large amount of everchanging content, that not only specialises in sculptures, but also paintings, canvas-art work and drawings which is what I love the most. The Hepworth building is simply amazing.
On the ground floor large concrete walls and ceilings are used to create this feeling of almost emptiness and somehow it is easy to find yourself dumbfounded in the reception alone. Walking up the concrete steps to the first floor you meet the first room of sculptures where you are greeted with a scenic view through the full height windows, of the river and bridge, to the front of the building. The rooms are slightly separate by having partitions of the wall in between, again creating a room which can easily spill into the next. Through to the room at the right of the stairs is another full window which sits on a lip of the building, making you feel as though at any moment you may fall into the river- an overwhelming sense of euphoria. The building alone is a contemporary piece of art, matching Barbara Hepworth’s sculpture designs.
As I love the floor to ceiling height windows so much this is definitely going to be a huge design concept that I would like to use in my future works playing with light, as it creates such an open space feeling and brings the inside of the building to the outside also creating a never ending feeling.
Overall I cannot fault the feel and layout of this building, I find it very inspiring as even though the building is grey and can feel dull to some, when inside, the full height windows and open space throughout make it feel like one huge hall, feeling open and free.
