The materials fayre took place in the Richard Stein building on campus this week. To gather more insight and background knowledge on materials we can use in our current and future projects, me and my flatmates decided to go to both days. As we went when the fayre first opened the employers were keen to talk to us and the stalls weren’t overly busy so we could speak more one to one with them.
Although a few of the stalls were the same companies from last year, it was great to refresh our memories on their materials and see the new ranges. The fayre ranged from Panaz’s fabrics for upholstery to Formica laminate for walls and ceilings.
One of my favourite stalls was the Corian materials on Monday. This stall was also at the materials fayre last year; however, this year Corian suits my design (The Soap Co.) better so I decided to get some more information from the employee. I found out that Corian is made out of recycled materials which are an Acrylic polymer and an Alumina trihydrate and can be shaped, cut out moulded and have textured added in through heat penetration. I really enjoyed visiting this stall and I have remembered information regarding the material due to the range of examples on display, as well as how in-depth the employer explained the process. He was very short and interactive, whilst informative, showing us the materials and how the process is carried out. This was great for me personally as I am a visual learner therefore can picture the process better in my head now.
Although I wished there were more stalls on show, I came away with all the information I needed on how and where to order the correct samples and where I can access more information about any materials I wish to use in future projects.
