Drawing un-convention

The atrium

As I walked into the Atrium in the Creative Arts building I instantly noticed the large triple-height open ceiling. With bright white walls and to my left a huge wall of glass panels the Atrium was overwhelming, however there is an almost… calming feeling about this space. I think this is because even though you feel kind of ‘trapped’ inside of this building you still feel connected to the nature outside through this large window.

During our first session we were introduced to an Interior Designer, she was doing a workshop on how to draw 2-point perspective drawings. My first thought was that this experience was going to be intense and tedious, despite thinking this the workshop was surprisingly enjoyable! We got to learn a new technique that I hadn’t used before and I found this unexpectedly easy to get the grasp of.

Our second session was without a doubt my favourite part of the day. It was almost nostalgic as I got to let loose and go back to the media and techniques that I used back in college. I liked being free and not thinking about what my next step would be which I should certainly do more in my own project work! We were asked to do various tasks such as take any media from the table (this ranged from chunky black marker pens to colourful oil pastels) and sketch the plant life in front of us using our left hand, closing our eyes and cutting up the one we liked the least. After that we collaged in the one we liked the least and used the range of materials to add in some textures and additional colour. At that point we swapped over our collages to our peers and we were asked to add some more texture to the others. This was a great exercise to do as it meant I couldn’t have an attachment to the piece and could take inspiration from the other collages around the table.

On our third session we followed instructions from the tutor to produce a 1-point perspective drawing. Our group all drew the same space and although there wasn’t much explaining from the tutor, this session was extremely helpful as I am a visual learner and could learn through copying what was on the projector.

Overall I feel like this day really excelled my drawing skills and gave me a new found confidence to experiment with new materials.
